109 mpg in a smart...

The cruise control for the 451 site http://www.smartcarcruisecontrol.com...p?showtopic=39 was doing some testing and got these results:

"So, track time was interesting! First off, everything went as expected with no negative surprises. We got in a good 3 hours of testing, and one thing that was really neat was that the longest test run yielded a 109mpg outing when cruising at 53mph! Sure, that's on a banked track representing ideal conditions, but still! I didn't think the smart had >100mpg in it!"

WOW!

Simply a stock 451 with cruise control gets over 100 mpg.....I don't buy it!

Pretty much any car cruising around 50 mph on a level track with banked corners could get double or more the normal mpg's. There's really no load to encourage the engine to call on more fuel for acceleration. Only enough fuel will be used to counter act the loss of energy through road friction and air drag. These are not real world results.

I just completed a long road trip in my Commander. I was getting 13.4 MPG on my way to Sacramento California and on my way back I played with the cruise control and the speed and got it up to 28 MPG when traveling 60 MPH on cruise.

I want cruise for my smart!!!

I don't either !

The 451 site is really dumb to have let anyone get the info without documenting proof first.

Their creditability is down the drain with me.

No one in Europe (with oem cruise) has gotten that with a 451 (even with the larger gallon

I am sure it is possible in the right conditions, downhill & coasting. He did not say it was a prolonged MPG.

As stated in my previous post, I more than doubled my normal MPG in perfect conditions, why should the smart not do the same? I was only able to keep that milage for about ten miles but it was nice while it lasted.

I can believe 109 mpg under those conditions. No stopping and starting at 53 mph....is ideal.

well, just think of it this way-
Going from stop and go city driving (worst case- 30 mpg) to strick highway (best case - say 45 mpg @ 65 mph) affords a pretty decent bump up in the mileage- in this example 15 mpg. That's a pretty extreme change in driving habit, right? So you're trying to sell me that just by fine tuning the highway driving speed you'd increase it by a whopping 60 mpg where as the big change from city to hwy only nets 15 mpg increase? I don't think so!

There is no such thing as OEM cruise on the 451, not even in Europe.
