2009?
So some who got an email after configuration were given a time window. Most recently the windows given were "second 1/2 of 2008." I went back and read my confirmation of configuration email.

Having made my reservation on 20 May 07 that put me just below or just at the 25,000 mark. The number of vehicles expected to be imported to the US this year. But since deliveries are regional and not just by reservation number it seems I may actually get my smart in 09 and not in 08. Or maybe they're hoping on reservation holders paying 2K in add on's to move the orphans off the lot and fill reservation orders? I'm trying to be patient and wait till the 31st when they will supposedly will have their "system" in place.
Color me disappointed.

Geography
My 25 JUN 07 reservation (1271) got me a "2nd-half 2008" confirmation notation on 15 FEB 08. That may already have been slewwed by my geography.

Angel,
Don't fret. I myself got the same generic email message after configuring mid November of last year. Neither does it say 1st half or 2nd half of 2008 in the message after configuration. My dealer told me that my car is expected to be delivered early April which is next month. In fact this is the actual message sent to me after I configured which is exactly the same as your email response.

Although you should look at your invitation to configure email. It should contain in the email message at the first paragraph the timeframe wether your car is delivered in the first half or second half of 2008. Down below is the copy of my invitation to configure email with a line the stipulates the estimated timeframe of delivery.
Dear diegosilang,
The U.S. arrival of the 2008 smart fortwo is getting closer every day. The enthusiasm and anticipation surrounding smart has been tremendous and we would like to thank you for being an important part of it from the beginning. As one of the first customers to place a reservation, we are pleased to inform you that we may be able to deliver your smart fortwo during the first half of 2008. For this to happen, you will need to finalize your reservation by verifying or changing your model and color choices, and by adding any options that you would like. It is important that you complete this process no later than xxxxxxx, 2007 to avoid any delays in the delivery of your smart fortwo.
smart USA has created the Reservation Confirmation Program that will provide you with exclusive access to specify your smart fortwo model and colors, add factory-installed options, update your contact information, and enable you to finalize your reservation. The Program, located at http://www.mysmartfortwo.com/, will also provide you with introductory pricing for your smart fortwo model as well as any factory installed options that you choose.
Your personal username and password to access this site are as follows.

I hope the above email copy of my configuration helps clarify your estimated delivery status.

Angel,
I too think you will take delivery this year also. I know location does play into demand and delivery, but my gut thinks you should hear something soon. A couple of people received "out of production" notices in the last couple of days including myself. Check out this thread for more info.
Bill
90 day window of anticipated delivery!

Angel,
I reserved in June 2007. I have been in contact with a VP at penske/smart. She told me when I spoke to her last month that I was in the top 50%, and they had 42000 reservations at that time. Below is part of an interview with Dave Schembri recently....looks like we will both be getting our smarts this year! As soon as the new tool is available, in about 7 days, we should know about when! Yippee!
Here is the article:
"...with oil prices topping $100 a barrel and with prices for regular unleaded gasoline approaching $4 a gallon, lots of Americans are thinking Smart now, so much so that the little car, with an initial U.S. allotment of about 30,000, is sold out in the United States through 2008, said David Schembri, president of Smart USA.
"We're walking a fine line between customers who are waiting too long for a Smart and those who are willing to wait long enough," said Schembri. He said Smart USA is launching an "It Pays to Wait" communications campaign to help placate customers who are eager to get the tiny, two-seat car that can get up to 40 miles per gallon in highway cruising and easily can be parked in the most congested urban environment.
Jensen and Schembri are worried that all of the waiting for Smart will drive prospective customers into the showrooms of Toyota, Honda or Nissan, all of which are exhibiting fuel-efficient little cars here."
