First off, I never said anything about Diesel being the only choice. I'm well aware of the cost difference, however to some people it might be worth it.

Second, I am more than satisfied with the performance of the 71HP model, enough so that I wouldn't consider the 84 if it were available. Perhaps if you weren't so quick to hack up my post in a manner to attempt to get snarky with me in the reply you would realize that I was referring to the 40HP CDI and not the 71HP Petrol engine.

It's not as if I have 2 posts on here and no reputation... in fact, this is one of the first and only negative things I have said about the smart, so your reply was entirely out of line.

Heh, I stand corrected. I'm an Ohio native... about 45 minutes from Columbus actually. In Columbus, you do want to do 55... they like to sit with the laser out. Get over on I-75 and things are quite the different story... I used to cruise at 80-85 back and forth to Toledo from Dayton a few times a month going to and coming from college.

107 MPG is incredible!

Ok, Wow107 MPG! Well is great milage and I know the diesel's reputation for being a high milage engine. I it would run on bio-diesel that would be even better. A french fry smart!

Not to highjack this post, but I did see something about an EV car called the "Think City" car from Think global that will be introduced this fall in CA. It has a small resemblance to a smart. Don't know how safe it is though. Fully electric with over 100 mile range.

The diesel engines make much more low end torque than the gas engines. You won't have any trouble "getting out of your own way" with the cdi. Many of the Canadian cdi owners were seeing 80+ mpg, and it wasn't that difficult to get over 100 mpg under ideal conditions. Google 100 mpg club.

I find the 71 hp engine to be a joke. Most will never use the full hp due to the rpm range where the hp peaks. I'd have been much happier with 45 hp and a lower torque/hp peak. And regular gas... (since we can't get diesel) I keep fantasizing that a high mpg version of the Pure will be offered. Won't happen in time for my delivery, if it ever does. The 1L motor doesn't lend itself to economy.

EricV...We are seeing some pretty good mpg figures for the 1.0L considering none have performance exhausts or intakes installed. In ideal conditions and with an economy minded driver I wouldn't be supprised to see milage in the 50's. For a naturally aspirated engine, I think that's pretty good. I do love the sound of 100 mpg though!

Understood. About as good as a Geo Metro. ;-) I do like many of the facets and features of the ForTwo, which is why I'll still buy one, (if it ever shows up). 1237 reservation # here, so I have a few months yet.

While 50s are possible, it seems like most of the reports are low to mid 40s after break in. Not horrible, but not cdi range either. The 450s generally saw 60s without much trouble, with the gas versions.

I rented a G&W 450 for a few days last year before ordering. The worst mileage was 41mpg and best was 50mpg - all highway back and forth to Chicago, that was with the gas turbo.

I now have 6000 miles on my (70 hp by the way) smart and you are incorrect in your assumptions.

Congrats Okie Boy. Your version of economy may vary, eh?
