European VINs are very different than US ones, notably: they do not have a model year marker.

And I would be blown away with shock if the mhd only came to Canada....I'm sure some are in the USA for testing too.

Your car's engine code is 31, I guarantee it! The X is the passive safety code. FYI:

European smart VIN decoding:

WME = smart

451 = 451 series

3 = coupé (cabriolet = 4)

80 = engine code for 52 kW mhd (00 = cdi; 30 = 45 kW gas; 31 = 52 kW gas; 32 = 62 kW gas turbo; 33 = 72 kW gas turbo)

1 = left hand drive (2 = right hand drive)

123456 = serial number - common between European and USA/CDN VINs


USA/CDN smart VIN decoding:

E = 451

X = checksum (may be 1-9 or X)

9 = model year code for 2009
