On October 13th, 1979 I was in a major collision when a '76 Monte Carlo that ran a red light at over 40mph and nailed me in the left headlight. I was in a Renualt R5 waiting to make a left turn. The force of the impact pushed and spun my car out of the way and I walked away with only a brused knee and whiplash. The car was totaled at 13 days old. I know that because my R5 was so light I got off easy. Small cars are safe, I don't care what people say.
Could just be me, but when they say it's worst in its class, that would also make it best in its class, as it IS the class in the USA, isn't it?
Thank You for making the point. At this time it is still the only new micro car sold in the USA. My wife and I are going to drive to NYC tomorrow in it.

The driver is the most effective safety feature in any car, when that fails is good to have some kind of protection. I know smart has put a lot of development towards safety and have done a great job considering the size of the fortwo.
I think the video I saw showed the smart sitting still that tells me the doors where not locked maybe that is why they came open? We all know our doors lock when power is on and you strat rolling. Do you think the NTSB locked them?
