Unsubstantiated, of course, but I wonder where the author came up with the statement? Perhaps he was just wishing or maybe he knows something we haven't heard yet.
"Americans don't like diesel cars, so smart's 800-cc, 40-hp three-cylinder diesel has been replaced by a more powerful gasoline engine (the diesel will be back, with BLUETEC hardware)."

Where do they get this: "Americans don't like diesel" thing? I see this sited over and over. I hope the Bluetec Smart is on the way. Tell me where to send my 99 bucks. I am writing the check even as I post this message.
I is highly speculated that Canada will get the Bluetec in 2009/10. This isn't new news, it has been mentioned in Carguide a Canadian automotive magazine before.

Canadians can import US cars under NAFTA I am told. Can Americans import Canadian cars? How about used Canadian cars? I may be feeling a Smart CDI yet.
If you got a diessel, even from Canada, where would you get service or repair?? It would be a long tow if there was a breakdown.
Jim,
Good point! However, I have a Sprinter based (M-B CDI) motor home set up to tow. Even with a tow behind it gets 20mpg. I could run right up I-5 to Vancouver, B.C. Mapquest says it's 600 miles. Something to think about for sure.
When people (stupidly) boil-over about BLUETEC without doing the required homework, they never realize how much hardware and "liquidware" and infrastructureware goes into it - much more than the little smart can ever accommodate.

Bring me a CDI with or without BLUTECH. We are hobbling small, highly efficient diesel cars for absolutely no reason. As I have said before, if they are clean enough for Europe they certainly are clean enough for the USA.
