Can someone explain the reservation numbers?

I just reserved two weeks ago. I live in CT. Some people on this site refer to each other as a "1173" or similiar number. What does that mean? Does that refer to when you reserved? How many people are on the waiting list at this point? Given that i recently reserved, how long a wait do you think I'll have? Any info you could give would be helpful. Thanks to all.

If you will cruise around this board, you will get a lot of information in the midst of tons of speculation. The last four numbers of your reservation correspond to the "1173" number you mention. It is a day-count from an early point in the Smart USA program. I reserved on May 11, 07 and that was day 1226. Everyone who reserved on that day sports "1226".

As noted, the reservation number that we refer to comprises the last four digits of the long number in your reservation email. The remainder of the numbers are a time-stamp of when you reserved in reverse order. 1173 was March 19, and is "day one" as far as reservations go. You and I are waaaayyyyyy back in line.

According to numbers offered by dealers today, it sounds like there are in excess of 40,000 reservations in front of you. I'm looking in the neighborhood if 34,000. Both of us will be lucky to get a car by this time next year.

But look on the bright side; we'll be able to hear how things work out, what the real fuel mileage will be, what problems pop up, what color red really is ;) etc. Plus we might get a car with more/different content as a 2009 smart.
