Daimler mulls second smart car production site-paper

FRANKFURT, Aug 23 (Reuters) - German car maker Daimler AG (DAIGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) is mulling a second production site for its smart brand on the back of surging demand for the minicars, a German magazine reported.

According to a report in auto motor und sport, the smart production site in the French city of Hambach is close to reaching its capacity limit.

I heard a rather elaborate urban legend that Daimler Benz was about to convert the old American Motors, (sorry) Renault, (sorry) American Motors, (sorry) Chrysler, (sorry) Daimer-Chrysler, (sorry)...well you know what I mean, the old car factory in Kenosha into a Smart production plant. That sounds far too logical to be true. Is it?

regardless WHERE they either build or remodel/reconstruct, i'm sure smart will keep the same 'green' principles in mind that went into the planning of smartville in Hambach. i believe Wisconsin WOULD be an area that could lend itself well to those principles.

regardless, it WOULD be awesome to have a plant ANYWHERE here in the US! i especially like the idea that was suggested of being able to have the option of picking up your own smart AT THE PLANT, much like the Corvette people do now.

that would be a nice little drive for me from Indy to Kenosha and back, but i'm down with it!

No new factory is being planned, the workers at Hambach are excited to add China to list of smart countries they make cars for. And the line gets longer.

Smarts rolling out of the old AMC plant!!! Talk about a dream come true! ( have have a few AMC's in the garage now) Might never happen but neat if it did!

Agreed! We lived in B'ham (Vestavia) when the opened up Vance for the SUV's. Give me a reason to get back up there for a round of golf with old friends & take a look at the factory with my Smart Car. Ron (Anastasia Island, a.k.a. St. Augustine Beach)
