Browsing ebay this morning, saw someone selling their fortwo reservation. It's already up to $5800 with the auction ending on the 18th. This will be fun to watch. Here's the link to the page - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2008-...QQcmdZViewItem
We have been contacted by our dealership (#1173), and have a delivery set up for next week. We would have to be offered a pretty obscene number for us to consider getting rid of ours! As tempting as it is to sell for a large profit, it will be fun to have something unique and exclusive - not to mention it's just a fun car.
This will be interesting to see how it plays out because as our reservations say:
"Any attempt to assign or transfer your reservation will result in the cancellation of your reservation and a return of your reservation fee without interest."
There is evidence that some are willing to pay $30,000 for a $15,000 2 year old Smart car.
Some folks will sucumb to the temptation... and so what...this is America and as long as the cars are on the road being driven by folks who desire and use them ----well---- who really cares how much they paid for the pleasure?
I was all set to buy a 450 for $30K when I found out (late) that PAG was finally importing NA spec Smart cars.
Getting a zero mileage 08 for $16K vs a 05 1200 mile same car for $29,999 caused me to get in line like almost every one here. In fact I thought about it and reserved a second one (1470) banking on the notion that these will be good deals for the first three or four years
With this much time equity invested waiting for the 08 I would need to see a substantial "offer" over MSRP to part with my new Smart...but rest assured...if someone offers me enough they will get her...
After you purchase your smart fortwo, you have the right to sell, transfer, destroy, or roll the car off a cliff, whatever your desire is. But to sell your reservation goes against what we all agreed upon when we made our initial reservation. I personally have emailed smartusa a complaint with the ebay link to this reservist, for trying to sell his reservation. I've been waiting patiently since June of '07 for my car. I think this guy on ebay is pretty slimy. I think we should flood smartusa with complaints about this guy in hopes they cancel his reservation!!!!
Since the car is on its way the seller really should have reworded the ad as he really is selling the car, and not the spot in the line - as he put it!
I am assuming he will pick up the car and title it, then sell it to the winner.

agree. it's very ambiguous. i had to read the entire post to see that he was selling his "spot" and not the car. isn't that alone against ebay policy? selling something you don't actually "have"? maybe not.
yep, I actually read the whole thing this time, and it appears he's hoping to in effect, sign the car over to the winner at the dealership. I would hope that the dealer would not honor doing so!

But just not yet the car and he explains what the bidder will have to do to finalize the deal....go with him to the dealer, do the deal and then do a DMV transfer to the bidder so that the sales tax is not paid double.
This is the same thing Cesarmore was trying to do back a few months ago but Ebay cancelled out his auction I believe.....same deal just alot closer to delivery time.
Hey....that's capitalizm at its finest.....if someone wants to pay that much to NOT WAIT....then so be it. It's his money and he can do with it what he wants.....even though he paying so much more for the car than he would if he waited like all the rest of us.
I thought he (the seller) was very upfront about all the particulars in his description and is trying to find that dude with more money and less patience to sell his reservation to. Not sure about whether it is in violation of the Penske reservation doctrine, however, because of the way in which he is doing the deal. He is taking delivery of his car at the dealership and then immediately transferring the car to the new owner.....sounds legit to me even if I would not do it. I want my SMART!!!!!!!!! An ugly Yaris couldn NEVER replace the Smart...NEVER!! But then to some people, cars are just a means of transportation and nothing else.

i actually have no problem with the capitalist side of it. my point was that i think it's against ebay policy to sell something you don't possess. and i believe that the Smart rez policy does say that you can't transfer your spot.
the shady part to me is where he says that the buyer has to "go with him to the dealer". i'm not sure what state he is in but i know that won't work in CA. you can't do a double transfer to avoid paying the sales tax. the only way for him to pull this off would be for him to take delivery and title the car in his name and then transfer it to the new buyer. that said, who's to say he can't show up to the dealer and say that he reserved the car for his "friend" or his "brother"? might be some grey area there.

For what he's making on the deal....if it really comes to a final winning bid before Ebay nixes it, he should pay the guys sales tax who buys it from him.
Register the car in his name and then do the transfer...state makes out good that way....I recall the state was PA.
