Diesel smart tops in Euro MPG marathon

And this is probably with the previous generation diesel engine...

Eco-driving benefits shown at MPG Marathon

A SMART ForTwo CDI city car has won first place in an eco rally by achieving an impressive 96.81 mpg [80.6 US MPG] over a 360-mile course across Lincolnshire, the Cotswolds, Shropshire, West Midlands, Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

Diesel Smart

To bad there isn't any demand for an 80 mile per gallon Diesel smart in the U.S. If there was I am sure smart would offer one to us.Well at least we can buy an battery powered version in a couple of years. They must not have the ability to build one that can run clean enough for the U.S. standards.Yeah Right!!!

If we had an 80+ MPG Diesel smart in the US, I'm sure some stupid reviewer would write, "The car only gets a puny 80 MPG."

Yup, a Gen I diesel in obviously extreme competition hypermiling. "Your mileage may vary."

By not trying at all, I get 60 US MPG (lifetime average over 82,000 miles). 70 would be achievable with some more care and attention and if the convertible top was never down (bad aero).
