Diesel supercar bests smart fuel efficiency

Interesting use of a LARGE American truck diesel engine and transmission - there should be plenty available...

It does not look bad but it seems like it might be a little cramped for some one my size. Here is the Trident site.

Ok, so when I look at it, 70mpg. So not bad. So I again look at it.

70mpg costing 75k pounds, which is about $125k - $150k depending on the dollar at the time.

Smart is 35mpg and max of 19k. So, MPG for the buck does not compute. Yes it is a sports car that gets awesome mpg, but don't compare it to the Smart. There is no coparison. One is a good cheap MPG car, the other is a expensive sports car that gets great MPG. Two totally different animals.

That's a terrible engine for such a car, the honking Duramax and it's huge transmission must weight at least 1/2 the total weight of the car which is 1200 kg. or 2650 lbs aprox. All that power and torque in a 2600 lbs car, good luck getting it to the ground even off idle.
If you are going to build a decent sports car at least put a light weight motor in it, LS-7 from the Z0-6 should fit nicely.
Just seems so overkill to me, if it must be diesel, then there are some very atractive BMW engines out there.

No comparison intended - they are certainly in different galaxies! It's just interesting to note the interest in efficiency even at the 'supercar' level where 'if you have to ask, you can't afford it' is usually the rule. The fact that they used diesel, and an unconventional setup at that, is also of interest. The article's comparison to the fortwo was incidental.

Actually, this post should probably be moved to the general car discussion forum...

Yeah, But most "Supercars" are at the other end of the MPG spectrum.

My 2005 fortwo CDI regularly gets 85mpg on the highway. Yes, Imperial mpg.
