ED Version @ Paris Motor Show

Here's the quote fr. NYT 10/02:
" Smart wasn't shy about speaking publicly for the first time about ED. In Smart-speak, however, those initials refer to Electric Drive – a first for the quirky microcar.

as a male, i really wish they would call it the "EV" for "Electric Vehicle" and NOT "ED" for "Electric Drive"......"ED" just, as someone else eluded to, brings back memories of those Bob Dole commercials a few years ago...

trust me, the LAST thing i want is "ED"!!!!

Agreed. The Chevy NOVA didn't do well in Central and South America. Why?

NO VA = "Doesn't go" in Spanish.

Companies should consider cultural issues with their naming conventions more often. It was a big enough risk for me to get the Smart. If I were to drive anything with initials "ED", I'd be ridiculed more than the "running start" jokes. Enough that I'd seek another brand or rebadge it on the dealer lot.

But, will the ED have a "limp mode" like the conventional gasoline smart cars?

On Display at Paris Motor Show

Saw this ED smart at the Paris Motor show on the floor (and hanging on a wall display). It was locked (the floor model), but they made a panel in the trunk cover, so you could look in it via back window. The electric motor is about 50% the size / space of the gas motor, lots of space around it to see the ground. Didn't see the batteries. Plug behind gas door to charge.

I was surprised to see so many people getting / sitting in and out of the "normal" smart cars on display, I would have thought they would be "common" by now.
