Electric Smart being offered

On the Hybrid Technologies web site: Order your Lithium Powered Vehicle | Hybrid Technologies
They are selling an Electric Smart for $43,500 dollars US.

This is just the start and when Penske starts getting these (maybe next year?) I am sure the price will be dropping considerably.

Where is the sign up? I want one.

Makes absolutely no economic sense. That's about $28,000 more than our smartie is going to cost......which is approximately 7000 gal. of gasoline. Assuming we use 7 gal./week (280 mi or so), thats 1000 weeks (19.2 yrs) of gas to pay the premium of electric. And thats not even considering the cost of electricity to recharge the e-smart and battery life, etc. I would love to see automobiles go 100% electric...but at current battery prices, all-electric (tesla??$109k!) or even electric priority gas elec hybrids (chevy volt, $40k!!) are going to remain the playthings of rich enviromentalists. Of course, if gas goes to $15/gal, we all may be singing a different tune, or walking, or converting our cars to cold fusion!

Personally wouldnt trust (or pay the extortionate prices) after market electric car mods.

Wait till Smart themselves produces an affordable (there are more and more affordable electric cars than just the Tesla) all electric or at least hybrid car.

The economics of electric cars are changing very rapidly. Batteries are getting better while gas gets more and more expensive. Gasoline is already close to $10/gal in London. Plug that number in, and the break even is after only 2800 gallons, or 7-8 years.

Also, consider that electric cars never need oil change changes, spark plugs, air filters. If they have regenerative brakes, the brakes last twice as long. I believe that if the US had been electrified 15 years earlier we would have been driving electric cars all along and we would have skipped the whole ICE thing. The problem was that in the early part of the 20th century it was easier to cross the country carrying gasoline than it was to find electric service in rural areas.

There is a very important event happening this weekend in Saudi Arabia. If the Saudis assert that they really are pumping at full speed, expect oil to hit $200 a barrel by this time next year.

I read in the news that Smart DOES have a diesel hybrid in Europe that is giving 80 mpg in tests. Will our environmentalists ever allow it here?????? NO............
