ELECTRIC SMART is coming

Daimler announces an electric Mercedes for 2010 - International Business-News-The Economic Times

Daimler announces an electric Mercedes for 2010
20 Jun, 2008, 2104 hrs IST, AGENCIES
FRANKFURT: German auto maker Daimler will market an electric model by its Mercedes division and one by its small city-car brand Smart in 2010, boss Dieter Zetsche said Friday in a press interview released in advance.

"We're are preparing an electric Smart for 2010 and an electric Mercedes for the same year," Zetsche told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in comments to be published on Saturday.

He did not give details on the cars' price but said it would depend on how the vehicles were sold.

"We will either sell the cars with a battery, or the battery will just be rented," Zetsche explained.

He estimated however that the number of clients willing to pay more for "clean" cars was limited.

Electric vehicles are under development by most auto manufacturers, and one produced by the Bollore group with Italian design firm Pininfarina is to be available commercially in June 2009.

US giant General Motors plans to sell its Volt model by 2010, while Peugeot Citroen of France and Mitsubishi Motors of Japan said recently they would join forces to develop electric power trains. . . .

Not even close to the other one

Howdy

The one offered by Lithium Tech is an old model (450)
that has been converted to electric drive.

This one is being offered by smart directly, so I would guess it is a 451?

Top Gear tried the ED Smart being tested in the UK and wasn't too impressed... hopefully the 2010 version is better at keeping a charge:

cool...2010 should be just about right...my current all-gas 2008 smart should be free and clear by 2012-2013 or so...

by the time i'm ready for an all electric replacement, the upcoming all-electric smart should have a couple of years under its belt...

Considering their general opinion of smarts (or other cars with less than 400hp), this is practically a glowing review! Unfortunately, my commute is 25 miles each direction, 75% highway. I'd love to do it in an electric Smart, but I consider a practical range for an electric vehicle to be 50% of what the mfr claims because the mfr almost always is using ideal conditions (new, fully-charged battery running a steady-state course over flat ground). The "real world" is much different from "ideal conditions."

so what in the "H" is a "smart ED"?

everything i've read and heard from smart is that they call it a "smart EV"

is there a difference? have they simply not chosen a name for it yet?

i just hope they don't compromise and call it the "smart VD"

smart ed is the name

In keeping with the naming of their other products

The fully electric version of the smart is officially called the smart ed (ED= electric drive)

various media have called it the smart ev (electric vehicle), but they are wrong.

And the mhd is for micro hybrid drive.

So, if you are out in your electric smart, you are "out smart ed"?
