Another reason ...not disputing what mattlimbaugh said... is that car dealers like to think all sales are FINAL! If you use a credit card you can dispute a problem, and halt payment. There are several reasons to stop payment until there is a resolution... Car dealers universally refuse to allow more then a a marginal amount on the CC.

I could not even pay for the Ford ESP via Credit Card locally... but I was able to purchase the extended service program contract on-line cheaper and with a 0% CC........wink, wink...hint hint

Another reason to eliminate them. I need a service center with a qualified mechanic but I have NO NEED of a dealer. Just let me configure my car online, pay for it with my paypal account and have UPS drop it off next Saturday around 11.

Consider the merits of this plan. Consumers won't have to pay for car-dealers to eat and buy houses and car manufacturers won't have to pay to air-condition them so cars might be a little less expensive or margins a little wider. Maybe we could split the difference.

Keep one or two dealers around for the gawking ninconpoops who shouldn't really be driving anyway or the random power-tripper who gets off on exercising their negotiation skills but let the rest of us get on with the drive ok?

Model exists for right now. See eBay. They even have some 450 smarts listed there from time to time.

I'm driving one of those around on my cubicle wall right now. Eventually my co-workers are going to get tired of my Jetson-space-car sound effect.

OH, I forgot to mention, in the New Perfect World, we would not have to WAIT FOR DEALERSHIPS TO BE BUILT.

pffft.

For me it was "why can't I use my credit card and earn 15,000 frequent flyer miles on my car purchase." And "why did I get that $30,000 limit if I can't buy a car with my credit card.

Actually, you probably could. You'd just have to have the CC company send you a certified check on that account.

It will use a different percentage though. One used for "cash advances", which are usually a WHOLE lot more than those for purchases/balance transfers...
