Just got of the phone w/ my dealer (Tampa Bay area)

I just got off the phone with the dealer for the Tampa Bay area who had JUST come back from the dealer meetings with smart. I was RSVP'ing for the reservation holder event which takes place on October 24 from 11-5:30. This is what I gleaned:

Dealer in Tampa Bay will be Lokey Mercedes on highway 19.

There are over 170 reservation holders in the TB area.

They're getting ready to break ground on the stand-alone smart part of the dealership (nothing's official 'cause "nothing's been signed", you all know how that is).

There are over 34k reservations so far. Smart was originally to ship 16k cars, but have upped that number to 24k for the first year. That is the most they will be able to make. Whether or not they can actually make 24k in a year remains to be seen - I kind of doubt it.

He was almost certain from the way the smart people were talking that the fortwo's will be here and ready for sale January 1, 08. He sounded pretty sure about this.

I, too, am anxiously awaiting to hear from our local MB dealership GM who told me in an early week email that she was heading for Michigan for that same SMart meeting and would let me know what's new.
And I wonder how that strike over there will effect all these deliverables???

My dealer in VA told me mine is expected for dilivery the 2nd week in january. I placed my order back 3-19-07 I can't wait.

***He also said the 451's will have Mitsubishi engines and not Mercedes engines. I guess most people already know this, but I wanted to verify it. My opinion is that that's fine as the Japanese seem to make a pretty decent car (I love my Nissan). But I'm not a gearhead, I just know what I like. As long as it runs and runs well I guess.

I didn't ask about the strike...I didn't want any bad news to ruin my euphoria. Color me ignorant in my bliss.
