Perhaps the trains don't move cars not all the way to Long Beach, but not just to Barstow. Cajon Pass is a big rail corridor into San Bernardino, along with trains that come into LA from the east through Palm Springs and the Banning Pass into San Bernardino and Colton.
I see the trains coming through Palm Springs all the time going to So Cal. Its mostly containers. This is the southern route passing through Arizona and Texas. The northern route comes through Flagstaff, AZ out of Chicago and then along the old Route 66 through the Cajon Pass through Barstow (where trains going north through Bakersfield head) and then south along i-15 to San Bernardino.
A lot of trucks move containers from San Pedro and Long Beach to distribution hubs in San Bernardino County, then repacked, loaded onto trains that head north and west.
Here is WWL's facility in Mira Loma, CA. Southern California Inland Empire (Riverside County). Its HUGE! Lots of trackage, lots of cars.

And for another wrinkle. Here's a link to a hugh rail auto processing facility in Van Nuys, CA near the old GM plant.
