Highly unlikely Freight via Train can make it to Long Beach for consolidation. Most Eastern Freight is unloaded in Barstow and trucked in. There are only two routes into So Calif Basin. Tehachapi Pass or the Cajon Pass The main North South line goes from San Diego to Downtown LA.

Perhaps the trains don't move cars not all the way to Long Beach, but not just to Barstow. Cajon Pass is a big rail corridor into San Bernardino, along with trains that come into LA from the east through Palm Springs and the Banning Pass into San Bernardino and Colton.

I see the trains coming through Palm Springs all the time going to So Cal. Its mostly containers. This is the southern route passing through Arizona and Texas. The northern route comes through Flagstaff, AZ out of Chicago and then along the old Route 66 through the Cajon Pass through Barstow (where trains going north through Bakersfield head) and then south along i-15 to San Bernardino.

A lot of trucks move containers from San Pedro and Long Beach to distribution hubs in San Bernardino County, then repacked, loaded onto trains that head north and west.

Here is WWL's facility in Mira Loma, CA. Southern California Inland Empire (Riverside County). Its HUGE! Lots of trackage, lots of cars.

And for another wrinkle. Here's a link to a hugh rail auto processing facility in Van Nuys, CA near the old GM plant. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...&t=h&z=18&om=1

Here's an interesting story on WWL http://www.americanshipper.com/paid/...wilhelmsen.asp

I haven't seen where they unload cars along the way, probably hidden somewhere in the huge San Bernardino yards.

Dickey, you have to stop hyperventilating. Get a brown paper lunch bag and breath into it for about 30 seconds! And, you should ease-off listening to Jiminy Cricket on that old 78. Vinnie too.

They are being shipped in the same boats to the same ports as Mercedes uses, That way they don't have to fill up a ship they can just tag along with MB and get them headed here faster.

Maybe they can just put one smart car in the trunk of each of the Mercedes?

smart cars are waiting right now at the docks in Baltimore, Jacksonville, FL and Long Beach, CA. Trucks will be rolling first of next week. My Los Angeles Area dealership says they will be arriving at the showroom Tuesday or Wednesday.
