Allow me to introduce you to a concept known as "deficit spending".......
Failure to think seems to be as common as a cold in Washington. Seems every elected official thinks the 3 Trillion in taxes collected every year is their personal bank account. As is common in government, it is believed that if they don't spend all the money every year, they won't get as much next year to spend. rawlus® has the right idea!! Feed your savings, starve the congress!!
these tax breaks for Hybrids and such are all out of wack, as far as i'm concerned.
if the government was serious about getting Hybrids on the road, they wouldn't discontinue the tax breaks after the first couple years of production but instead CONTINUE THEM.
for instance, any of us wanting to buy a Prius TODAY (God forbid...j/k!!) will get NO TAX BREAK.
if they would help out EVERYONE, more people would get on board and buy......DUH!!!!
Even when the Prius tax break was in effect, most folks who could afford to buy a new one were in the alternative minimum tax bracket ( like me) and if you even paid $1 in alternative minimum tax, you lost the entire $3,250 tax credit ( credit, not deduction). Sux but true. A phoney baloney tax break if there ever was one.
Government is doing absolutely nothing to motivate migration to fuel saving vehicles, other than maybe refusing to lower the gas tax.
I thought the total of all state and federal taxes on a gallon was about 60 cents? Am I wrong? If not then that would lower the price in CA to about $4. Not much change at all. Even if the tax was $1.50 the price is still over $3.....
i wouldn't mind seeing gas at 6.00/gallon with 50% of that being taxes if i thought i could trust the gov't to use the $ for what they said they would use it for. infrastructure maintenance, alternative transportation, etc. but they won't, they never do. look at the cigarette tax, 2% goes to anti-smoking campaigns, the other 98% goes to who knows what. new tulips for the governor's flowerbeds for all i know.
Since I am ineligible for health insurance due to a pre-existing condition (tinnitus, a ringing in the ears!), I would be glad to pay $6 a gallon if it meant I could get insurance. Been turned down by every insurance company in CA.....The wife and I are on our own not matter how much we can afford to pay.
Why in the world would they give a tax break to a car that gets worse gas mileage than a Honda Civic????? The poor mileage for a 1300 pound car with a one liter engine should qualify it for a tax hike, not a break!

This would be similar to the tax break you’d get for buying a hybrid when they first arrived. So let’s keep our fingers crossed on that one! I am not sure if it is a country wide thing or just for here in KY. Either way, it’s a good initiative. Figured I’d share that news for those that might not have been aware. We’ll have to keep an eye on this one.
subman631 - Posters here routinely report getting milage numbers in the low 40's, some in the low 50's, what Honda Civic model, other than the hybrid, gets that? The tax credit would be for being smart enough to buy a fuel sipping smart rather than a gas guzzling GM or Ford Hybrid SUV!! The idea being, the government should reinforce and encourage purchase of fuel efficient vehicles through tax credits.
