I am a 1228, or maybe a 1224, I really can't remember. Anyway, I configured on 12/14 and smart of Fairfield in CT just called to say my car is expected in April.
They want me to go down and fill out a Purchase Order, leave a deposit (?) and talk trade ins. For me this is now crunch time, I have been wavering back and forwards on the smart since I ordered. While I love small cars and used to rip around the UK in my Mum's original Mini, I am just not sure the fortwo is right for me. Lately I have been eyeing the Saturn Astra 3dr. It is a few dollars more than my Yellow/Silver Cabrio would be, but seems more practical and for the miles I drive, about 8000 a year, the gas cost is not too significant.
Does anyone know what the “official” contact procedure is? I understand Reservation then confirmation, (my reservation 4/11[#1196] and confirmation 11/17) but then what? My dealer says I should get an email from smartusa about 30 days out with a vin. Smart customer service (1 800 smartusa) says my next contact will be from my dealer when HE gets the info the car is here. Who is right? I thought I have read on this website that some have gotten emails from smartusa but the customer service was adamant that I WOULD NOT get am email from them.

Don't buy this car due to mileage #s. This car is not your moms Mini, an Astra is just an other small car there are lots out there. There is only one micro car being sold in the US right now. Go see the dealer take it for a ride if you don't like it let them sell it it to the next that does want it. only you can decide what you want or need.

Geesh... I'm wondering how 1200 reservations are already being taken care of when 1180's & 1190's are still waiting. Must be the East coast has less reservations than the West coast. I'm an 1188 myself and got a call 3 weeks ago that it would be 60-90 days. I would have been totally happy if they called me to come and fill out a purchase order and put a deposit down.
With respect to making a decision—if you're waffling now—then you may want to let the next Smart reservation holder have an opportunity. There are plenty of people who are looking for orphans.
I'm thinking the shipments may be bigger than what we were getting in January and Febuary. I think I stated somwhere in a thread a while ago that once we get beyond the initial rush of 1170s and 1180s that there would be more config dates in a shipment batch. But It has alot to do with the fact too that Fairfield has a small area to cover. The next closest dealer is maybe 40 miles away tops.

California has quite a few dealers and they are still in the early 1180's. I'm noticing that anyone in 1190-1200's that have taken delivery are in the Midwest or on East Coast. Kind of shameful since we have the beautiful 70-80 degree weather to drive our new Smarts around in.
Yea, Im a 1228 and got my 90 day email from my dealer. They gave me the VIN# when I called them and said I should have my Smart by the end of april / early May.
Californians must have really been attracted to the smart, they get the most dealers and the most smarts. But they will have to wait unfortunatley due to the whole "load balancing" deal with delivery across the country.
