World premiere in Leipzig: smart fortwo with natural gas drive
On the International Automobile (1 to 9 April 2006) is the smart first prototype of a smart drive with natural gas. The smart fortwo cng (compressed natural gas) has a bivalent drive. Unlike vehicles with so-called monovalent drive concepts, the prototype of the choice between petrol and gas drive.
The modular design of the smart fortwo will allow the high-pressure gas tank components (2 x 16 litres) and a petrol tank (12 litres) completely in the ground to accommodate. Interior and trunk volume therefore remain unchanged. The only exception: on the center console are charging status indicator and the button to switch between the two drive modes. The exchange between the two fuel types, even while driving. The “bergang from one mode to another is very harmonious. If the gas inventories are low, drivers can ride to the nearest gas station without using the gasoline drive.
In a standard consumption of about 3.2 kilograms of natural gas and 4.7 litres of petrol per 100 kilometers, the range of the smart fortwo cng at 393 kilometres (138 km natural gas, petrol 255 km).
