I just heard the sound of the smart EV (not the ED!) fail in the US:

Quote:
Top speed is limited to 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph), a move intended to maximize the battery’s range. Daimler says 62 mph is plenty for a car designed primarily for city driving.
So when the car isn't being used for its "primary" purpose, it gets the reputation of a dweeb.

Ah! I'd kill for a Smart that color! But the miles just won't work for me. I plan on living long so they make batteries that will get me across the state of PA on one charge.

I like that color scheme! EV won't do it for me since I drive too far/fast.

I like it. I need 50 mi/day to commute. And I think the color scheme would look great with my spare yellow panels installed.

I think (I hope) I can wait for an EV until 2012.

smart is being totally upfront about the ED IMHO; any use outside of the true city environment just doesn't make sense for this car, so consider purchasing accordingly.

EXACTLY! I would love to have one, but like others, I drive about 60 miles/day.

Now if I only had a way to recharge it during the 10 hours I'm at work.......

Yes, there isn't much that would kill the smart EV/ED faster than a bunch of media reports of the cars running out of juice and being stranded on freeways between cities...except maybe a bunch of media reports about the EV going up in flames due to overheating batteries.

So the suburbs are out? I leave near a highway which gets me to almost anything beyond groceries and coffee. A commute of 30 miles each way would work in the (Wired called it a) smart EV. But not at 60mph.

Utter shame.

Maybe the same reasoning for Toyoto. But you can bet they will join the race if it's profitable.
