Automotive News has an article today about why Mazda is not going to bring its mhd type cars with stop-start systems to the USA. Basically it's because the EPA test doesn't consider the positive effect that stop-start has on fuel consumption and emissions. No doubt smart is reluctant to bring these mhd cars over for the same reason - if the mhd is also rated at 33/41, who would buy it? The reality is probably more flattering, especially in the urban cycle.

What else stops when engine cuts out???

The smart that I'm looking to buy in the land down under (brand new 2008 451 coupe model, with the primo pack and power steering) has this technology, and I have heard a few negative comments on another forum.

Does anyone know when the engine cuts out (when waiting at the lights etc), does the air-conditioning, radio etc cut out too? Just curious as to what else stops when the engine does. Sorry if this is a silly question, but I thought you guys would know the answer.

Thanks once again guys - I love this forum!!!
