Smart Performance In IIHS Bumper Tests

As policyholder with Amica insurance, I received their Fall 2009 newsletter yesterday. I was very pleasantly surprised to see the Smart featured in the first article in the newsletter, "Little Cars Tall Big Bumper Bills". In the safety tests done by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), Smart beats out the other six cars it was being compared with. (duh....no surprise there! ) Here is the article if you are interested:

I have a friend who has a Honda Fit; I can't wait to show her this article !

I liked ther results but hated the standards of the test.
To Earn a Good raiting, you had to have damage under your deductable.

Basicly, its only good if you don't call us acording to the IIHS

In a day and age where a mere "A" grade is okay, and you need an "A+" to be considered for many things, I understand the sentiment of not gaining a (merely) "Good" grade due to the criteria. However, in this case, and when compared to so many other "experts" that have noted the smart's ability to excel in most every car-related category, then blow the car off for not being a Hummer, the IIHS test is an excellent indicator of what you are getting into with ANY car. And the fact that, in this particular test (and a number of others), the smart beat many other cars, in and out of its category, speaks volumes about this little car we all have come to love to drive.
So, pealing away self-imposed negatives about not gaining "glowing scores", we did well, and the article reveals that to anyone with a brain. I am glad for such a review...

In IIHS-speak, "A" indicates "Acceptible," their rating below the highest, "Good."
