well, the numbers may be close, but not quite! If you where to assume it to be correct, that means they would have invited everyone completely through July, and that's not the case. The number on confirmation invites HAS to be less then 20,000 at this point.
BTW, is that the copy of the whole story Carnut? To be talking about the forfour, and then in the next sentence jump to twofor confirmations seems out of context!
How can they say that 70% of the 30,000 reservations have turned into definite orders when the confirmation e-mails to turn the reservations stalled with May/June? Is it possible that they have already confirmed 20,000 units before they scaled back the confirmations? I'm at 1411 so I'm wondering where in the 30,000+ world my reservation sits.
Is it possible that smart has confirmed 20,000 units before posting stopped that they had received their confirmation invite e-mail? Basically, no. Last June, the guess was that 16000 cars had been reserved. If they have 20,000 confirmations, we would be hearing about confirmations for reservations made in the fall.
I have been exchanging e-mail with smart USA (well, IB) and they told me that they are doing confirmations now and "the number of invitations sent continues to increase". In fact, this was cited as the reason that they could not tell me when I might receive my confirmation.
I also asked them when the last batch of confirmations was done and when the next one would be done. In the first response, they told me that they could not tell me when I would receive my confirmation (as mentioned above). I have not received a second response after I pointed out that they did not answer my question.
They haven't confirmed 20000 yet. You will be asked to confirm (order) about six months before delivery. Batches go out about weekly, except since Christmas when they stopped to make sure everything goes okay with the first deliveries.

So if everything does or does not go okay with the first deliveries they will....?
One thing to keep in mind is, aside from those who's contact information has changed, PAG will use the information gleaned from those who reserved but backed out, once the backlog has eased a bit. Offer them a "jump in line" ahead of others because of their original reservation or somesuch.
I reserved on June 20th and have NOT configured as of yet. That means that they have configured approximatly 30 days worth of reservations. Unless 30 thousand people configured within those 30 days there is no way to know what the drop out rate would be.
