Some Real Delivery Numbers from Penske

Quote:
The Smart is the first French-built car sold in the US in more than 20 years with 68 dealerships nationwide since mid-January. About 1400 Smart ForTwo units were delivered that month; Penske expects to deliver 1500 more during February and another 2000 in March.

yep, that confirms the numbers quoted on behave of Penske in the other thread. I wonder what they considered by "delivered"? Certainly I bet 1400 cars were not delivered to dealers in January, but I guess to port counts.

So there is a "ramping up" of production, a good sign for a little decrease in wait time.

They better get going and increse production and get the first big foot hold here in the US because the hand writing is on the wall now. $4-5-6 dollar a gallon is not that far away. Just look at all of those small cars in Europe, that is our future here in the US. Once the japanese see that this country is hungry for the micro cars LOOK OUT!! they will give the smart a one hell of a run for the money and they play hardball, they play to win. The IQ will be here sooner than they think, bet on it.. JMO.

Of course January was a "short month" for deliveries since they began the second/third week of the month.

At the risk of repeating myself (see "From The Source") the production in late February was set at 600 cars/day, 200 of them to the US specifications... This a quote from the official Smartville spokesman.

"The Smart is the first French-built car sold in the US in more than 20 years..."

Not to nitpick, but wasn't the Peugeot 405 sold in the usa until about 1991?

To nitpick even more, the Bugatti Veyron went on sale in 2005 or 2006, and it's made in Molsheim/Dorlisheim in France.

Amen

I've been saying the same thing for over year on other forums only to be dumped on by the OPEC-friendly SUV owners who moronically think that oil will be here forever and they can afford it at any price. Not only should Smart ramp up for the $6 a gallon fuel but the Big Three better get their heads out of the dark spaces and develop/unveil MUCH more fuel efficient alternatives. Heck, I even saw a hybrid motorscooter yesterday! 300 MPG! )
