It's just good, clean laughs to push your buttons and watch owners get all defensive and indignant and self-importantly smug at buying "a pig in a poke." The feel good factor might salve the ego, but it doesn't revive the manufacturer, ensure long-term parts availability and repairs, nor create a resale market.
So the reviewers poke at you, and watch you jump to the bait.
Better'n a day at the circus!
Oh. Well, THAT explains it.
Fair enough: in my world, nothing's sacred in the name of humour.
We’ve had the smart going on 16 months now. No one has ever bad-mouthed it, at least in our presence. There have been a few uninformed queries (e.g. One woman asked if it was electric, but from the context of her question, she was asking if it was a hybrid.), but most ask about gas mileage, and are pleased to hear the answer. Some ask how fast it will go and are surprised at that answer. One guy asked if I felt safe in it. I said “yes” and gave him one of the yellow smartUSA safety handouts. He read it and asked if he could keep it. Also one of the FAQ ones, and he kept that too. Real life is not so bad - better than the spew of journalists who get paid to write something whether they know what they are talking about or not.
For these naysayers websites, the controversy is needed for their paychecks. Thats all it is. If the website has no visitors, no advertising money is generated.

Reason: still thinking
I've only been a Smart Pure owner for a week but have noticed the need for many highway drivers to tailgate & zoom past my new car. I think there's actually disdain for Smart cars. On the other hand I've also noted grandmothers & children on street corners waving wildly. If I stop at a public place when I return there's usually a small band of people surrounding "Herbie" looking at everything.
I also own a BV250 Piaggio scooter that gets similar reactions. When I'm on my Triumph Rocket III Touring they all change their tune & give me a wide berth. People are so anal!
On the plus side when encountering another Smart car on the highway spontaneous extreme waving and big smiles occur. Hmmmmm!
So, you didn't get the memo... Owning a smart is similar to being a rock star. they either love you, or hate you. Either way, don't let it bother you too much. I can see you have toys based on what you like which is as it should be. You will get people you don't even know tell you it is a death trap and how foolish you are to have one, you will get people that love it and want a ride...You know how safe they are and you know how much fun they are. When they zoom past, just smile. When they jump up and down waving, just smile. What goes around, comes around. Be sure to wave at those same people as they are filling up with gas
I am at that magical age of 60. At this age you don't give a toot what people think about your toys, they're YOUR toys. As children, kids would be envious of anything they didn't have and make fun of those that had something unique. Some people never grow up. I've found that at Christmas I give MYSELF the BEST toys.!!!!!!
