Quite simply, the thing bounces around like a ping-pong ball. It's normal for a car to rebound somewhat in a crash test, but the ForTwo corkscrews off the crash sled to its right, performing a full spin and part of another, even at the relatively low speed of an IIHS test (35 mph).
In the controlled environment of the IIHS test lab, this is one accident. On the road, it's a series of them.

Now look at this same IIHS test for the MINI Cooper, and tell me it isn't exactly as likely to end up in the path of another vehicle post-crash as the smart:
Also note that the dummy's head strikes both the door (quite hard) and the B-pillar in this test, despite the Good rating.
It took less than one minute's research to find this video on the internet, but I guess even that minimal effort is too much for the average journalist.
