Man, that's a tough one. Apparently most of us concluded that the fun/unique/cool factor outweighs most anything that makes sense. LMAO
If this is your only transport maybe lean towards another car if not go Smart go!

Sure is... Much harder than I had imagined it could be... I was completely nuts over this car when I first learned about it and then dragged several of my friends and co-workers to the smart display at an art festival to show it off... I've visualized the day I'd drive my very own custom smart off the lot... and now my darned "is this the right thing to do" security system is going full tilt trying to keep myself out of trouble financially. It wouldn't make my payments more than my income on a monthly basis, but would cut into home improvements, fun money, etc.

I think my "gut" is saying try to run my current car into the ground, then buy a used smart or new electric or hybrid smart when mine finally dies. I guess I'll take my car to the shop this week and have them check it all out and see if I should plan to keep it or ditch it.

I can picture myself cruising around the lakes this summer, and actually finding a place to park to get out and rollerblade...

decisions decisions... Anyone got a spare $16000 they can donate? )

like your answer to the complainers above.

Also, My Mother always said " Anything worth having is worth waiting for.

To quote my 17 yo Granddaughter (third one to drive ours) you just like all of the attention you get driving the smart.. A few minutes later as she was driving " I think I do too"
Everyone just hang in there and good things will happen.

Not to rain on your optimism Donald, because I usually am optimistic. For some, however, it's still inconclusive this early in the game whether it's worth having. And in my situation I'll be out of time for "waiting" in about a week. Just me.....sorry.

yes, and some people don't have the financial freedom to make owning a smart a no-brainer. If it were free, we'd all wait and be sure we took what we ordered. I'm an optimistic person as well, which is just making this so much harder for me to think rationally about this decision. This car is just so happy-go-lucky in personality which I adore, but I just don't want it causing me financial strain. Unless someone wants to donate to my cause? ) Perhaps I could email Oprah or Gates....

Nice list of all the reasons you came up AGAINST the smart. Now, allow me to suggest to make a written list of all you may have IN FAVOR of the smart, and balance it... It may help.
Tough one, though. Unless, like lots of us, you get to become an unconditional! Flaws and warts, the whole package.

Call me a skeptic. I'll believe it when I see it.

For my current needs the smart is perfect, so the decision was easy. You make some really good points and I really like my Scion xA as a second car.

But one reason you might want to get the smart, is the ease with which you can sell it several months from now. Unlike the other cars you are considering the smart should remain in strong enough demand for the near future to command a good resale price. Maybe even a little profit.

Hmmmmmm - is it an automatic? I much prefer the stick....for handling and mileage. I appreciate your input. My other option would be the Yaris as I've said. I test drove it and like it and the sticker claims 36 mpg hwy.

Saronian, that's a very good point. I hadn't thought about that.
