100 octane gas avail. (Racing Fuel)

Hey so I was driving home from work taking a scenic rout yesterday and there is this Super America station selling 100 octane gas. Its their racing fuel blend.

I have been told the higher octane gas obtains better mileage and better response from our engines. But will 100 octane damage our engines? If not, will it theoretically improve the performance? Or is a test required?

A station close to me has 104 octane "racing fuel". Haven't looked lately, but back when gas was $2/gal, that stuff was $5.99.gal. You would have to see one heck of an improvement in mileage to justify the difference in price.

from what I've observed from other cars I've driven, there's usually little performance improvement and definitely no mileage improvement by bumping the octane up beyond what is specified for that engine. My first guess is that I don't think the smart would benefit from it.

To a point, but 100 octane is beyond that point! You would have to have your ecu reprogrammed to take advantage of 100 octane. I don't think 100 octane will hurt your engine, but it will damage your wallet.

Yea, it was out of order when I approached it, either they are out of gas or its busted. I will swing by another time to see when the price is. I am curious, but I won't be filling my Smart with it anytime soon.

Oh cool thanks. I'm not putting lead in my tank though.

Back in my performance boating days, I ran 100 octane or better if I could find it because I had turbo motors. Glad I'm out of that, I burned over 2 gallons per MINUTE! And that was at cruising speed, if someone tried to pass me, it got real expensive...
