Has anyone who's picked up an orphan had to pay a $1000 deposit to be on an "orphan" list? I suppose it's not necessarily wrong, but I don't think it's right either. If you can get financing within 24hrs that should be sufficient. I emailed SmartUSA about it but have rcvd no response. What say you?
Some dealers charge to get on the Orphan list, some do not. If you are between dealerships you should find another one, and being in Utah, you don't have that option unless you want to drive to Portland, Seattle, or Sacramento. Good Luck!

I got an orphan from the Lindon, UT dealership and did the $1K to be on the list. It all worked out fine. I don't think its an issue to make sure a person is serious about wanting an orphan so they don't make tons of calls. I specified what I wanted and had a few hours to make my decision.
$100 deposit for the Orphan list at Loeber Motors North of Chicago. Although, I agree the $1000 deposit will keep the Orphan list smaller for those who really want a Smart.

I called and got my orphan that same day. I wasnt even on the list. I had to put $99 down for one online though before they would sell me the orphan. I still have my reservation for the smart I ordered online.
