If you notice in the last picture those two soft window straps are keeping the glass safe. I went to the local smart center and talked to Joe the technician. He says that there is no chance of the glass "popping out" and with these straps the glass will not break. "Just take turns easy with the weight on the back"
So here you go folks here is your cheapest...easiest option for putting up to TWO (2) bikes on your smart. You won' even feel that they are on the back at any speed. Also with this rack they stay super tight on it...no swaying. Its the Yakima Super Joe 2 rack for $89 and you'll need to buy 1 more pack of two window hooks for the sides for $20.
I brought it again to the local dealership and they are now recommending these who people that ask about the bike rack. It looks like the "official" one is many months away!
I mostly get around by bicycle but sometimes it would be nice to have the smart. Has anyone heard of a smart rack I can put on the back of my bike? That way I can trade off if it starts to rain.
Before someone tells me I'm an idiot, I must disclose I am kidding.
What happened to this rack idea? Its been about a year since you posted this and wondered how you found it. I too bought the super joe 2 with the rear window strap shortly after seeing your post. I am concerned with the black plastic breaking which bears the pressure of the top straps. I saw that you were looking to buy or bought an oem one recently.Should I continue to use this rack? I tend to go on long trips and recently have to make the straps super tight to prevent shifting which puts a big load on the upper black plastic roof trim.
I found the same Issues as well glenbo, the black plastic needs to be reinforced more. Mine has a slight warp in it after much use. I did end up getting the OEM rack.
