The 1st week & even more in love

I've had my baby one whole week now I thought I would share my experience so far.

I really didn't think people would still be staring as much as they are. I would have thought some of the novelty would have worn off by now. I find it a little distracting, but I've gotten good at blocking most of it out. The ones that were hard to block out were the lady next to me on I395 that rolled down her window (mine was down, too) and yelled over to me how much she liked my smart. I appreciated it, but she almost rear ended the car in front of her. And then there was the guy that pulled out in front of of a car from a parking lot to the street, then cut off the person behind me so he could break out his camera and snap a few pictures. At that same time there was a car full of teenage girls screaming/chearing hanging out the window of a car and waving at me. Wow.

Things that have scared me or made me nervous.
I was on my way back to my home town Friday afternoon and a huge black bear must have thought I was a drop of honey coming down the highway. Not really, but I have literally lived in that area my whole life except for the last 5 years and NEVER saw a bear before this. I was in shock so much that I didn't snap out of at to hit the breaks till the last second. That would have been great. Run into a bear with my car having owned it less than a week.
Then there was the crazy guy at the gas station that kept following me around my car trying to talk to me. He asked me if it was worth it. WTF kind of a question is that? I'm not sure if he was a hater, a liker, or just crazy. My mom was in my smart with a really worried look on her face and I have no idea what the guy was talking about.
And I had my smart parked outside of a friend's bar for a while. When I got back to my smart the door man said people had been walking by taking pictures for hours. And the next day when having lunch I actually sat next to a window where I could see my baby and every last person that left the restaurant walked by and checked out my smart. That's cool, but it makes me a bit paranoid.

Things to brag about.
The neighbor upstairs (insert bad name here) nearly broke her neck when she drove in the parking lot and saw my smart for the first time. She was dropped jawed and almost dropped her cell. Then today when I got home she was out in the parking lot and told me that I had the most beautiful car in the world. HA!!! She wants my car.
The owner of my company came to the job site and had no reason to stop by my desk, but he did. He had to tell me he liked my car.

As for how my smart is driving.
The first couple of days I believe I was "babying" her a bit too much. She was lurching when shifting gears at the very beginning, but not any more. I can still feel/tell when the gears are shifting but it's much smoother now. So either I'm driving her better or the computer is learning me better.
I got 37.5 mpg on my first tank. It was almost all sitting in rush hour with the A/C on. I'm not going to complain that I wish I had done better. Everyone always wants better mpgs. I look at it this way; the first tank, not broken in, grid lock, A/C and 14 more miles to the gallon better than my last car.

All in all I'm VERY happy with my smart. I'm looking forward to my road trip in two weeks. And I wouldn't trade her for the world.

About 3 weeks ago I saw a black bear while driving to work. He (or she) was pretty good off the side of the road or else I would of honked. I've got the compact air horn installed and I love to honk at animals, people, things just to see how they react. No, I only honk when I know I can get away with it, never in anger except once when someone was about to sideswipe me.

I've had MANY close calls in this car, a few of them would of happened no matter what car I was driving. ONE of them - the closest SAVED me because of the Smart's small size. It was that close -a bigger car wouldn't of been able to maneuver the
small opening that I was able to go through. It was like a movie, two objects closing in on each other and the hero zooms in between the two "just in time".

Yuckmoon. Sounds like you got one of the good ones. Ours too started out around 37 MPG, and as the break in went on, the MPG got even better.

At around the 1,000 mile mark we were doing 46-47 MPG at 30% city 70% freeway and highway. You will do the same.

Everyone seems to have their method of break in ,but as we run high mileage on our cars, we believe in really romping on them once in awhile during break in. We touch the red line from time to time, but never hold any speed constant till 1,500 miles.

We love our Smart car, and now have 14k on the ode.

Good luck with your new toy. A2Jack

Have had my Smartie for 5+ weeks now and checked the milage for the second time. First time only got 30mpg, but this time I show about 35mpg. Hope it continues to go up. It has been very warm and I run the air conditioner and my driving is 90% city driving. As far as all the attention it gets, I don't know if it is such a good thing anymore. I do like the attention, but sometimes it gets really old. Like when I am in a hurry or tired and I get someone who is obviously leery of it and trying to find flaws with milage, safety, and price etc. I do enjoy talking about it to truly interested and knowledgeable people. Still find it amusing when not inside at how small and cute it is. Oh, and today when I was coming out of Meijers I heard a couple behind me say "Look at the Irkle car" !!! Ugh!!

Hi Yuckmoon

I'm in the same area as you (Falls Church), there are quite a few around here now so I too, am surprised at the number of stares I get. Same thing happened to me this weekend, I was in a restaurant and my Smart was outside where I could see it. I could not believe the number of people who walked up to it and put their hands on the windows to look inside! I even saw one guy pull on the door handle. What - was he going to get in it!?? I would never touch someone else's car. That makes me nervous, I just never know what people are up to. I don't mind talking to people about it, but the most popular question I'm getting is starting to get annoying (and I've only had the car since last Thursday) - "Can you take that on the highway?" I'm going to start saying no, I need a special permit to do that!

I get the same highway question at least once a week. If you can see someone doing that - hit the red button on your key fob. That's the peeker deterrent option - all smarts are equipped with them.

Not a bad idea at all about the red button.

I need to wash my smart. She's not dirty, she's just covered in fingerprints.

I haven't gotten the highway question that much. I keep getting the "Oh. There is cargo room in the back!".

And for the guy that tried the door handle, yes, he probably would have gotten in. And his reasoning would have been it's your fault for leaving it unlocked. (people can be so ill-mannered) I wish it beeped or something when it locked. I keep hitting the lock button two and tree times.
