2 things...Ipod Playing, and ScanGauge II

How exactly do you hook up an ipod to the first regular version of the smart radio? something about a cord or something?

and is the ScanGauge II really worth it? is it a hoax, or does it actually get the mpg and all quite accurate? since it is $150 which i don't have quite yet for one...?

Ipod - plug in the glove box.
Scangauge II- Isn't more information about your engine helpful? RPM (delayed), water temp, instant mpg. You can let up on the throttle just a little and watch the mpg increase.
Up to you. and your pocketbook.;)

An additional note about the iPod hookup: the connection is made with an 1/8" mini jack cable. Each end of the cable will need an 1/8" mini plug. It looks exactly like the plug from your iPod headphones. There is, unfortunately, no direct hookup to control the iPod--a feature sorely lacking this many years after the iPod was introduced, especially since something like 130 million have been sold. And given there's no control of the iPod, the glove box is the lamest place to put the connection. I drive with the box open just so I can get to it to skip songs. I use an AirClick (which is now unfortunately discontinued) on my motorcycle, which allows non-line-of-sight remote control. I guess I'll have to start using that in the car, too. It wouldn't be so bad if the connection was from the front of the radio. Then I'd just get a charger/dock to plug into the 12V adapter. I may do that and run the cable out the side of the glove box. Just posting this info as half-complaint and half info for others in the same situation.

FWIW, I carefully drilled a small hole in the bottom / back of the glove box and fished the audio cable for my Sirius radio down to the cup holder area, stuffed my sat. radio mount into the forward cup holder and was all set. Finding metal for the magnetic mount antenna was a little more challenging.

If it doesn't have one from the factory then you can do a google and find loads of adapters that will work.

It's not a hoax BUT I don't think they are worth it. There are MANY other options that you can find on the net. The CarChip Pro is one such option. Code readers start around 40.00 and will pay for themselves the first time you need one. If you get a professional unit you'll know what the dealer knows, and many people buy these to fix their cars themselves. You're Smart should be under warranty so you shouldn't need one, but it will still keep your dealer honest ;)

Just my opinion but the Scangauge is significantly more than just a code reader. I have had one for several years moving it from vehicle to vehicle as needed. It has helped each member of my family get better gas mileage by giving a real time indication based on user habits, road conditions, etc. In fact, I have only once used it to read a code. In my opinion it is well worth the cost of the unit - in fact it is bargain. But don't take my word for it - visit the ScanGauge website to see what it does besides read codes. For those with magnetic satellite antennas that don't know where to mount them, glue a velcro square to the bottom of the antenna and to the center of the dash by the windshield. works great.

I have XM installed. They make a suction cup mount for the antenna to mount inside the windshield. I have mine tucked behind the rearview, works great.

There is also a metal disk with adhesive backing for those that may want to move the satellite unit among vehicles.

It's very inexpensive, comes in a variety of sizes, and allows you to remove the satellite antenna for whatever reason. I have seen them in stores and on ebay. A suction cup or a magnet will adhere to them.
