I'm going to wait for the 2010 smart fortwo to come out before I buy one now. Hopefully the mhd version will be in the US for that one.

Think of the gas you can save at that long line at Jack in the Box if you install a FFTD aka Fred Flintstone trap door under you seat. Now you can turn off your engine, order, and walk up to window. This will save you as much as 12 bucks per year. BTW 95% of all statistics are made up on the spot, including this one.

MHD?

I thought you guys were going all James Bond on some new 007 watercraft with magnetohydrodynamic drive...

I think any of the drivetrain offerings from Europe would be attractive and welcome to our market-- hybrid, electric or diesel.

I'm in the hoping-for-electric camp.

What I am scared of is that right after I buy a current fortwo, the year right after, they will come out with some totally redesigned one the following year making mine look lame, just as many other car makers have done in the past. Look how the Saturn Vue changed DRASTICALLY from 2007 to 2008. Look at the interior of the 2008 and 2009 Honda Fit. The 2009 Fit interior blows away the one in the 2008. I'm afraid that if I buy a 2009 or 2010 fortwo, then the 2011 fortwo may make the current fortwo's look like a joke. Car makers are always good at doing that and killing the value of the previous versions by drastically improving the next one. That does wonders for their company and burns all of the people who bought the older version. What are we supposed to trade our cars in every year or two just to keep up with the latest versions like a piece of software?!?

Also look how they changed the Honda Civic from 2005 and 2006. That just KILLS the value of the 2005 once people see how cool the 2006 version is.

I just wish I could find out when the 3rd gen fortwo comes available so right when it comes out, I want to buy the 2nd year of it so the bugs can be worked out. Look how all of the 2008 fortwo's had to get the software upgrade. I want the one I buy to be next to perfect with great reviews from everyone.

I've never seen a car be in so much demand with so many bad reviews all over the Internet. All the reviews complain about the transmission, lack of space, lack of power, the premium fuel requirement, etc. I don't care about the lack of space part. I want this car purposely for its size. That's why I'd rather have one instead of a new Honda Fit, even though the Fit is made much, much better. I LOVE the turning radius of the fortwo and how easy it is to park, maintain, etc. It's like having a street legal golf cart. And the one with the Brabus wheels and suspension handles excellent. I could take a Passion and just put Eibach springs and rims from TSW and call it a day for thousands less than the cost of a Brabus.

It would be cool if the fortwo mhd got like 37 MPG in the city. That would be SWEET!

I don't know why they don't install a mild hybrid on it the same way they did the Saturn Aura and Vue. The Vue has a very small Hybrid battery. It's only needed for those first few seconds of take off to increase the city MPG. They could do the same with the fortwo using a bunch of 1.5 or 2.0 farad capacitors and install them all around the vehicle where you would not see them. You'd only need them for a quick burst and then they would quickly recharge.

Estimates are that mhd improves city mpg by about 20%, so that would raise EPA estimates for city driving from 33 to 39.5 mpg.

Smart reps at the NY Auto show said that the next smart to come to the US should be the electric smart & that it will be a 2011 model, arriving here in the fall of 2010. They said that they don't know when or if the mhd will ever be brought here.

I would love to see them bring the mhd, but I don't know that it will ever happen due to increased cost, which would mean a higher price, which seems to fly in the face of Penske's marketing scheme. I think they also have doubts about how much saving there would be on US roads, given Americans' driving habits, & how marketable it would be among Americans.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm probably better off without it, given where I live. My savings would likely be limited & it's one more thing to break down or have problems.

I am in extreme Miami traffic and need the mhd. After hanging out at the smart dealer for a few hours today, the guy told me that the mhd will never be available in the US. I hope he's wrong. I want to hold off as long as possible until the 2010 or 2011 version that will have mhd, if possible. I read that the electric version of the car doesn't go very far. It will be a real pain to have to charge that thing every single day.

I'll have to actually plug it in when I get to my garage and never stop by a gas station again? Oh, pity me.

How hard will it be to plug it in at home overnight?

If for no other reason, these bragging rights might be enough to bring the MHD to the USA if it performs just as well*. All the other kids will be doing it, so anyone that doesn't will be left behind.

* As long as A/C and other accessories work just as well - otherwise it's pointless to use MHD 6-8 months out of every Southern year.
