OK, it's not true. I emailed the people who produce the guide, they checked with Damiler, and it still requires premium. At least the government folks were quick to follow-up.

The fuel type for the 2010 Smart vehicles is indeed "Premium Required". We have updated our database to Premium and will have the new corrected data loaded to our server in the next day or so.
