Back in the “good-old-days” of all motorsports, and when the 500cc Norton Manx M30 was in its heyday, the 500cc FIA Formula 3 was also thriving (and bringing along the tyro Stirling Moss among others). The F3 engines to have were the Manx and the Matchless G50. But Norton would not sell their M30 engines as separate units. So, as was often done, F3 privateers bought complete M30 bikes and pulled out the engines for F3 four-wheeling, replaced the engines in the Norton Featherbed frames with 3-cylinder Triumph Trident engines, and re-sold the rig to clubmen road racers - a successful combination.
