3 orphans today

Just got a call from the Smart center in San Diego. they have a red/black passion. a yellow/black passion, and a blue/silver passion. sadly he said they loaded them up with like 4 options . Lo jak, dvd navigation system, powdercoated wheels ( red for red one, yellow for yellow, blue for the blue one. and the paint/interior protection * rolls eyes* totalled $5,580 over msrp. Guy said they wanted $21,000 + for each. I thanked him for his quick response by calling me to see if I'm interested but that's wayyyyyy too much for what I'm looking for. Pity too, he said that that's the set up all of there orphans will be getting

No surprise they're not too concerned about losing the 2% for selling out of their area.

I wish they'd stop optioning orphans to the max... I know they need to make money and the margin is thin but it kinda defeats the purpose of a low cost, high mileage, fun car.

I can understand a dealer giving you the option to take the extras and doing their hardest to convince you to pay for them (it's called doing a good job selling) but to just load up the orphans and say "take it or leave it" to reservation holders who are on the orphan list and want to get a car sooner is a really poor decision. Not exactly a good way to make loyal customers. It hurts peoples feelings because they obviously want the car, but don't necessarily want to be forced to pony up another 5K. A really bad way to do business at San Diego Smart. Glad I don't have to deal with them.

Especially since there is almost no residual value to those add-ons when you go to sell or trade the car. Its an immediate write-off just for the pleasure of being first on the block to own one.
