With the dollar losing it's value in the world stock market, I wonder how much MB wants to fill the standing orders quick as possible to lessen their lost?

Third shift would be more cost effective for Smart. Not paying overtime..getting their $$$ faster. IMHO Getting more cars out by Spring will inspire more sales, especially if they don't have to wait a YEAR to get it.

Forget about OT**last time I was in France it was in the news that several execs at a big firm were arrested for working more than 39 hrs per week, which is the legal limit there. That's how they deal with an 11% unemployment rate, that and taking 2 1/2 hr lunches. It is possible all this may change with Sarkozy, who actually admires the US, being elected President.

Thanks for the post. I keep saying the French aren't going to work OT, but this thread continues to live.

I know this will break a lot of your hearts, but the common French auto worker couldn't care less if you get your car next month or next year.

Another reason I was told when I was in France that a third shift won't be added was that it is very hard to layoff workers. A third shift would solve a short term problem but create a long term problem. When the demand slows down next year smart would be stuck with 30% more employees than they need. Basiclly jobs are for life in France.

Well, the glass of wine is either half empty or half full. I think it's half full because I drank the first half last night. We need someone in France who works at the factory to give us the inside story. Then we will know (maybe).

Mike is right...These are "The FACTS" about this whole topic.

It is a political issue between Germany and France, as well. The French believe the Germans owe them something. Keeping this company rolling helps both countries feel better about themselves.

I spend a lot of time in France and mike is essentially correct. So all we can do is get over it. It is different than our way but it is there way and though it might seem wrong or foolish to us it is right for them.

The French and Germans working together to build cars for anxious American's who are going nuts waiting. Sounds like a marriage made in heaven. They'll probably give everyone an extra month of vacation as a bonus...lol
