418.7 miles on one tank (with .5 gal to spare)!

Yes, I just filled up after what was easily my best tank ever. I've really been hypermiling it lately (see my earlier posts on the subj). This was the same tank that I wrote about when I noted that you can't trust the first one or two bars of the gas tank indicator. After a half tank, I'd gone 218 miles or so, suggesting that 436 miles was possible. It turns out that this was extremely accurate.

I filled up on my way back from Albany, driving slowly (avg of 56 mph) as I always do. At 390 miles, I passed up a station just as the "1 gal" indicator came on; the hway sign said "Next service station: 30 miles." I decided to go for it.

I pulled in with .5 gal to spare. My ScanGauge was dead on: It said I'd used 8.3 gallons, and I filled up with 8.3 gallons. Doing the math, I get an average of 50.4 mpg! That's for the whole tank!

Calculations indicate that I could have gone about another 25-30 miles, reaching just under 450 miles on this tank.

I firmly believe that 450 mpt is within the realm of possibility. It's not a good idea, but it can probably be done.

I want to get "HYPRMILR" for a licence plate now -- or something like it!

Go Smartie Go! I love this car! I also enjoyed a good deal of schadenfreude as I watched those SUVs and megatrucks as they poured over $100 into their tanks....

I don't see why a 500 mile tank isn't within the realm of possibility. I've done 53MPG on a tank, and now that I know the tank is 10 gallons, ... why not?

Thanks! Let's hope your 2nd bar is as kind as the first. In my car's case, the 2nd bar (and thereafter) seems to be pretty accurate. If you can get to 200+ miles by the half tank mark, you should be good to go. Keep us posted!

You guys are bringing a spare, filled gas can, right? And not calling 1-800-MORE-GAS when you run out, right?

is that 800 # for real? Anyway, I did not have a spare gas can, tho I've strongly considered it. I just made sure that there was a gas station within striking distance and I hoped that there wouldn't be a sudden traffic jam. [If there had been, I'd have pulled over.]

On two occasions I've had to call Triple A to give me a gallon when I ran out, but that was with my old car that had a broken gas gauge.

What are your ScanGauge settings? Tank size, speed setting, fuel setting, etc.
I can't get a correct setting on mine where everything is accurate.
