50+ MPG club

Yesterday I broke the 50+ mpg barrier for the first time I drove home from Houston to Dallas last night and was following a big rig for about 170 miles at 65 mph. Before I left Houston I filled up my smart. By the time I got home I had driven 241 miles. The gas gauge had 4 bars left. So I decided to fill up my smart again to see how many gallons I've used. 4.8 gallons later it was full. I was very excited that I broke the 50 barrier (even though I cheated )

Sounds good, of course you need to tell us what you get on the NEXT tank of gas too. Good job and keep it up but make sure you fill us in on what your next tanks mileage is.

Good job! It is exciting to see a good mpg number on fill-up. I have a 52 mpg tank on Fuelly as well. The thing that gets you though, is early pump shutoff. With so little gas being pumped, even a .2 gallon or so will make a big difference (2 mpg in this case). You really have to average it out to get something useful. I'll see a high 40s tank and the next tank is low 40s which puts me back at my average.

If you're not already on Fuelly, check it out at Fuelly.com.

Yeah, I've had some screwy tanks lately, according to fuelly.com, and it has to do with early shut-offs more than anything.

My last 5 tanks: 53, 42, 44, 50, 54. It's worth noting that the average for that time span was about 48 mpg. Did I actually score a 50+ tankful during that time? Probably. I drove exceedingly carefully for one of those tanks and reached 443.4 miles on one tank (8.3 gallons to refuel), and I hadn't overfilled the tank the previous time, so in all likelihood I was getting about 51-52 mpg for that tank.

One tank, one day. Seattle to Crescent City, CA. 505 miles. 9.0 gallons. Do the math.

I have hit the 47 mpg barrier a number of times, but that's the best I can do (so far).

My problem is I hate to be passed up on the freeway by everyone, so I go about 70 mph; rev counter about 3200rpm.
