AARP...

I am miffed at AARP. And I am being polite!
Called because their online insurance quote would not bring up smart. Asked if they would insure me and let them know I am a member and have been for many years, home and autos, No claims or accidents great driving record. She said AARP has never heard of smart fortwo, smart car, MB smart or any other variant of the name. I tried to inform her of the thousands hitting our shores and she cut in asking for a Vin#.
I explained I'm on a waiting list.
She said 'when you get a Vin# we can help you, be sure to call from the dealer so we can get all the info from both of you and don't forget your membership card, we will fax you both then'.

Between now and when I get my new smart passion I sure hope this thread is kept up to date.

Terry

There are many more reasons to be miffed at AARP but that would start a political debat... so I keep my mouth shut...

Smart car Insurance from AARP.

AARP's main focus is to sell their own brand of health insurance (after they worked so hard to kill low cost health care in this country)

They seem to have little interest in auto insurance. Try State Farm a lot of our members have ended up there .

AARP Auto Insurance is sold by The Hartford. Funny, I thought some others on the forum had gotten quotes from AARP. AARP Auto Insurance has millions of insureds and they are fairly competitive in most markets. Perhaps this customer service rep was not the best.

Bought my Insurance through AARP, the Hartford. Was no problem with a Vin #. They did not have it set up in the system and of course have no history on them but they were happy to take it. Price was similar to my Mini at $340 for 6 months. They said they may be able to adjust downward over time as history is built with the smart cars.

For the purposes of getting a quote, just use a VIN# from one of the cars on the dealer's lot or one from the list of cars in transit shown somewhere else in the group.

Do a search on this site for Liberty Mutual... the official partner of smart for insurance. It cost me $400 per year, and NO, I don't get a commission! They had amazing prices on my homeowner's insurance, too!

This whole insurance thing is a lot like the dealer fees. Before I confirmed my smart insurance with Foremost through AARP which had my auto prior as well as my home I checked with Liberty Mutual and for me in Florida with no accidents or tickets they quoted me almost $1100.

Obviously the state and local where you live has a lot to do with everyone's rates as well as accident and moving violation histories.

Yes, it does vary. I'm with Shelter Insurance, because my house and other car is with them as well, and my smart insurance is approx. $250/6 months.

I called my Allstate agent the other day; $238/6 months.

I gave her a VIN from the dealer's lot, which gave her access to the rates since the car is so new.
