Accidently over-flowed gas tank

I was refilling the other day and the gas nozzle did not shut off automatically like it was suppose to. I had the nozzle flow on the low setting and wasn't watching when suddenly I heard the gas overflowing. I was so concerned about the Evaporative Fuel thing getting fouled up, (which I heard can be very expensive to fix) and so I told the gas station management about it. I went on a 100 trip right away with no trouble.

So am I worried for nothing or what?

Good question. Call your dealer and ask them tomorrow just to cover all the bases. If it's the gas station's fault, you want to establish that early on just in case you do have a problem. Not sure if they have a clause or sign that says, "not responsible for damaged caused by pumps that don't shut off."

I had a pump not shut off out by Gila Bend on a trip to San Diego about a month ago. For the next 40 miles or so my smart kept feeling like it was "missing" (particularly when accelerating), which was scary since I was by myself and it was 114 degrees out. I really didn't want to stop and call smart or anybody else. After about 40 miles the "missing" stopped, and it's been fine ever since. I have over 3000 miles on my car now, and that had never happened before or since.

That is what happens when the person who used the pump right before you, "topped off" their tank...Even tho it is posted on every pump, people still do it. It messes up the shut off valve thingy for the next person.

Oh, and if you use a credit/debit card to pay at the pump, be sure to push the button on the lower left corner of the key pad that says "clear". It clears your payment info from the pump so the krafty geeks that pump after you leave can't use your card to pay for their gas.

Charcoal Canister

This has happened to me too. My understanding is when the tank is overfilled; you run the risk of getting the fuel backed up into the charcoal canister. When this happens, the wet charcoal temporarily blocks the air from going back into the gas tank as the fuel level drops. The engine misfiring is due to fuel starvation. If it's bad enough, the "Check Engine" light comes on. Let the vehicle sit for a while so the fuel can evaporate in the charcoal canister and everything should be all right.
