Researching

I've sent an email to the Johannesburg Metro Police asking for information on whether or not a seat belt had been utilized in the involved smart. These reports are so rare (regarding the death of someone driving a smart) that they bear research when reported. There are many that hang their hats on their belief of an unsafe design... a design that has been around for ten years. Though there may well be deaths occurring in smart cars, they are unusual enough that they show up in these Google searches. I believe the last one was a suicide attempt into a tree at Christmas in England, but the one before that was at least a year and a half ago and it turned out to be falsely reported as a smart (picture showed four lugs on the wheel). We must all realize that this is "news" when it is something that does not ordinarily happen. Other car makers usually don't have the disadvantage of car types being reported in fatalities.

I do hope this doesn't get the same treatment as when I ride my motorcycle. For some reason people seem to be unable to resist repeating whatever the latest motorcycle carnage consisted of that their friend of a friend of a friend heard about.
If it is on the road, people are going to die in or on it. Why is it when I drive my pickup, people don't immediately talk about the last bubba that drove his F150 into the tree?

Smarts in an accident...

Show me the full stats - 800,000 Smarts in Europe (or there-abouts), and all we have is one confirmed fatality? We get that almost weekly with SUV's and Bubba-trucks in South Carolina...

Give me some meaningful stats, and I'll decide whether to worry or not

Not enough information in this report, Looking forward to the response Ron gets.

We need details such as air bags, seat belt usage, speed of vehicles, type of head on impact, nature of injury (she did not die until a few days later, always a chance of medical negligence)...
