Let's face it, no car is compleatly safe, a lot depends on your driving ability and knowing what goes on around you. I drove an 18 wheeler for 40 years and a car when not in my truck. NO ACCIDENTS. I don't talk on the phone, or do anything else that will distract me. after some of the stupid things I have seen some drivers do are beyond belief. Everyone goofs up but if not careful it can cost you your life.

It was a ForFour, not a 450 or a 451.....this is the press image of the car.

This is the vehicle that collided with her ForFour. Difficult to place any blame on a vehicle in any way in such a serious crash.

Please bear in mind that there are three types (actually four) of smart car:
450 original fortwo
451 new fortwo
452 roadster
454 forfour (i believe this last one has four lug nuts...)

both the 452 and the 454 are not only different from each other, but are tremendously different from (and would perform differently in every kind of crash) from the 450/1 .

It is obvious despite the outcome the smart faired well. The risk of owning as small vehicle is the result of the accident.
I can say I feel safer in the smart than I do in cars that are a lot larger than the smart.
If it's your time to go I don't think any amount of steel is going to save you.
Just my thoughts, thank you for sharing the info and the photos. We do need to know this information. If anything it encourages us to be a little more careful in our fun little smarts!

Well if one of the cars hit with such force to flip over not many cars would have a good out come no matter what you are in. Then again I wasn't there and I also lack the big picture of what happened that lead to this out come.

With that being said, the odds of this happening I would sum up to being rare. Comparable to getting hit by lightning, attacked by a shark & dieing in a plane accident.

Sad fact of life is, you never know when its just plain and simply your time to go. I could have the safest car in the world and get taken out by slipping down the steps.

Heart goes out to the familys & civic personnel that responded to this unfortunate accident.
