So I know people will be ading on to their cars. Are the dealerships going to be offering different options and upgrades, or do we have to do that all our own? Also, if the dealers are doing it, are they all going to have the same options available, or are they going to be different at individual dealerships??
NO real word yet on what dealers will be offering in the way of non standard or aftermarket goodies.
When invited to configure you Smart car these are the typical options:

Metallic paint $225
Silver metallic tridion safety cell $175
Alarm system $160 (might be a dealer installed option)*
Power steering $450
Heated seats $220
Fog lamps $110 (probably will be a dealer option)*
Additional instruments $120 (probably will be a dealer option)*
smart premium radio (AM/FM, mp3-compatible 6 disc CD changer; incl. 2 speakers, aux input jack for mp3 device [radio 10] ) $150
* only my guess
Option packages
Smart premium sound system $350
- smart premium radio (AM/FM, mp3-compatible 6 disc CD changer; aux input jack for mp3 device [radio 10])
- smart sound system (2 tweeters, 2 mid range, and subwoofer)
Comfort Package $850
- Power steering
- Leather seats
- Heated seats
- Rain and light sensor (might be a dealer installed option)*
- Auto-off headlamps with exit delay (might be a dealer installed option)*
There are Brabus accessories in Europe that we don't know if the US dealers will all carry... we probably will not see the Brabus go fast motor upgrades but should see all the glitter and bling crap (I do not like the Brabus styling)
There are some other things like floor mats, cup holders, I-pod holders, cell phone holders, factory navigation system...etc that the dealers will most likely carry

My dealer confirmed the alarm, fogs and instrument pods can all be dealer installed. They will also be doing the Brabus bits.
Interesting, coming down the line will be a "Roger Penske Special Edition." That would be a neat looking smart!
Do we know yet what a set of body panels will cost in the U.S.?
I am seeing 595 to 750 Euros or Brit pounds for a full set
at todays exchange rates that is in the $1200-$1800 range
My guess is a full set will most likely be in the $800~$1000 range for the American market
Soon there will be full sets on E-bay. I predict by end of next year a raw black set you can paint any color will be reasonably priced... this is a very cool car and the stock colors are fairly boring so I expect this will be the hottest item for quite some time
