High 90's in NorCal, A/C on without recirculate engaged, fan # 3 to start, then #2 after a couple of minutes. The car was real cool and no high-pitched noises, Piccola, my friend. It appears that most Smart owners find their A/C working well. I'd really suggest having the service dept. check out coolant levels and leaks for all those with poor performance. I really hope we don't inherit the problems our Canadian friends have had with their 450 smarts!

Arizona Heat

I have been Smart for a little over 3 weeks now (820 miles) and live in Mesa, AZ...

So far, with mid nineties outside, my Smart has done an excellent job of keeping me cool.

Like was mentioned before, it is a bit loud on high speed - but it doesn't take more than a couple of miles before I can start turning it down a bit.

Cooling performance seems to be on par or slightly improved from previous vehicles I have owned.. And I pay VERY close attention to the A/C.

I have live here in this beautiful blissful AZ heat for over 40 years...

No complaints on my Smart yet..

I appreciate the posts. I was just thinking about that with the engine in the car, how would the a/c do in the heat and traffic? It's supposed to be in the 90's all week here in Dallas. Keep up the good work!!

Our first experience with the Smart was in St. Barts FWI where the sun is (almost) always shining with the temperature around 86 F. and the A/C was always great. Roll down the windows to purge the hot air. Even with a black roof and black seats it was cool within a minute from the beaches. The St. Barts experiences made us Smart enthuiasts.

My first drive of a smart was on St. Barts, too. We think it was 2002. The manual mode was certainly necessary on some of the hills. The one we rented had removable roof panels so we took them off. I don't recall if we ran the A/C.
It was there that my wife said, "If they ever import these to the USA I'll get a Drivers License." Last week she got her Learners' Permit.

101 this weekend on a road trip to Irvine. After sitting in the parking lot (no sunshade) for an hour, it cooled down quickly. The key (as others have said) is to hit the 'Recirculate' button and flip to temp. switch to full cool.

I don't have mine yet, so don't know....but why is this necessary if it's automatic temperature control? If it's set for 70 degrees in a 120 degree car, shouldn't it be at max cooling ability, automatically (aside for the recirculate air function)?

i dont have the car either but what i have noticed in the parent company mercedes benz is that when you turn on the car in a hot day the air blows hot and once you start driving it cools down to the temp it should be at but if the car is parked it will take forever to turn cold. its a brand new C class go figure
