I ordered the alarm for one reason only: to fill the stupid switch blank on the dash. It's the same reason I got heated seats and fog lights, and I would gladly pay for whatever goes in that damned seventh blank spot (apparently an overseas option only).
I really don't like blank switches in a car because the first thing that pops in my mind when I see them is "what was this person too cheap to buy?"
I was at a Mercedes-Benz dealer in the South Bay not too long ago with a friend who was looking to buy a CLK. While he was test driving and negotiating and whatnot, I sat in an SL65 AMG convertible on the showroom floor. The car had a sticker price somewhere well north of $130,000 and it had FIVE switch blanks on the console! Five! What FIVE options could possibly be missing for $130,000?! Sitting in this expensive car, the only things that caught my eye were those blanks.
So, yeah, I'm nuts, but I frikkin' hate switch blanks and therefore I got the alarm. The car will be buried in an underground garage 99% of the time with cameras, an electric gate, and a security guard on staff 24/7. I have no need for the actual alarm.
I got the alarm and the Lojack. Let's face it, with the demand for these cars already high and climbing, it is only a matter of time before it gets stolen. The way I look at it, it is small money to protect yourself. And it gives me peace of mind. The insurance discount was irrelevant to the decision.
