Any accidents resulted from people looking at your smart car?

I’ve had my smart car for almost a month now and absolutely love it. When I first started driving the car I was concerned about people hitting me, but the more I drive the car the more I become aware of people looking at the car and not where they are going.

There have been several close call accidents near me recently. I’m hoping there are no stories, but I won’t be surprised to hear of others having the same experience.

Not yet luckily, but I've been concerned about that. They may end up banning the smart because of it. It still amazes how much attention it gets except from a few people on cell phone who aren't paying attention to ANYTHING around them.

I "created" an accident last week. While I was waiting to exit from the parking lot onto the road in front of the Bloomfield Hills Post Office in Michigan. A line of cars were passing by me. Each and everyone was gawking at my smart. I was looking left.... there was a traffic light to my right.
I saw the light turn red. Vehicles were stopping...but this one woman in an SUV that was gawking me.

Then SCREECH... SKID... BANG! She rear ended a stop car in the line of cars for the traffic light. I felt bad, but it did stop traffic so I could make my left turn... and away I went.
I wonder how she is going to tell that accident to everyone?

Not really an accident, more like an incedent. We had the cabrio out this evening to dinner at the Forum shopping center. Our two golden retrievers were with us. As we were leaving the restaraunt, people were gawking and snapping pictures. As I took a picture of the dogs hanging out the windows, Barney Fife pulls up in his golf cart and starts yelling at everyone to quit taking pictures. It is NOT Permitted in the shopping center! He got really mad when I took his picture. We got in the smartmobile and got out of there fast.
I can tell you this- a smart can outrun a golf cart.

Barney might need a different night job. What did it hurt him letting people take pictures of your car? Some people need to take a chill pill.

I have driven almost 1000 miles in the three weeks since I took delivery. I haven't come close to an accident, but I did have one "Oh, S**T" moment when an 18 wheeler was curious and wouldn't let me out of his slipstream at the front of his tractor. He would slow down when I did, and speed up when I did. I have installed a CB so I can communicate with them.

The last weekend in March, I was driving through a small coastal town which was preparing for their St Pat's town parade. Apparently it was a rain check parade. Anyway, there were tons of people (of all ages) lined up for blocks and here I come with my top down looking like the main attraction. While approaching a red light, I was third behind two cars. I noticed everyone looking at the smart even the young guy in front of me was checking out the car in his driver side mirror and rear mirror. Unfortunately, he kept inching up and eventually rear-ended the car in front of him. Thankfully they pulled over to assess the damage which didn't look like much. I felt real bad for him. Both were driving beat up cars but I wondered, would the kid admit to looking in his rearview mirror at my smartie? I doubt it!

We were on a sidestreet in the mtns. of Asheville NC at a stop sign about to pull out on the main highway when two cars passed. The first slowed to look and the second was looking but didn't slow enough. He ran off the road to avoid a rearender - and regained the highway in good shape.
