Had an incident with a dude in a big white worktruck on the way home from Smart Madness. He cut me off once....ok...no big deal, he was merging. Then, I was accelerating to pull around him and he eases over again, no signal, blocks my path. At this point I figured he was messing with me. I passed him and gave him a nice long bird, which he immediately returned. No confusion, he knew what he was doing. I was smiling though...I mean, the behemoth he was driving must have been a PITA. It was bad traffic, I guess some people were in a foul mood.
Yeah, I do notice that people expect this thing to be slower than it is, but once you're underway it's all about momentum. The tiny size of the smart just means you can fit in gaps others can't, which is a good way to scrape off tailgaters. The SprintBooster helps with this too. When they follow you, you know you got a fan hehe.
I am dismayed to see the OP is from the same county I am from, but I would expect some bad apples around here....thankfully, I've not run into any vandalism yet. Some benefits to working from home I guess.
I totally agree about leaving the smart's back end even with other cars in parking spaces. I learned about the fake open space thing riding motorcycles...pull all the way in and some person parking at mach 5 won't see you in time.
There was a truck near my place too in a parking lot taking two spots, but in the smart I was still able to squeeze in. Can't understand why someone would expose their vehicles like that, coz parking in two spots is just asking to get keyed (not that I would do such a thing) but it's a super-lame and selfish maneuver, especially in lots with little parking as are common in L.A.
My car was less than one month old this past St. Patrick's day, when some drunk bozo broke off my gas cap cover, while it WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY! There are a few bars about 2 blocks away and apparently he staggered up the street, lost or looking for his car.
The best the cop (I called to report the incident) and I could deduce, was that he was going to pee in my gas tank! Fortunately, he only broke off the outer cap and apparently couldn't unscrew the inner one. He was already well down the street when I came outside and figured out what happened. I tried to run after him, but I tripped on the uneven sidewalk and busted my knee (no, I had not been drinking myself) so he got lost back in the crowds of the bars where he came from. I think he was way too loaded to be siphoning gas and there were plenty of SUVs parked on the streets that he could have gotten to more easily. He didn't have anything in his hands when I saw him staggering back down to the bar patio crowds. Fortunately, I got the cap replaced ok and there was no other damage. (except to me--I still have the scar to remind me of that night!)
Most of the attention my little Weepod had gotten has been positive. My "Actual Size" sticker on my back window brings a lot of smiles.
I will say though, if I ever catch someone messin' with my lil' baby again, I will kick butt and take names!
I haven't had any bad reactions yet(crossed fingers). I did go into a convienience store this weekend with my wife staying in the car. By the time I came out after buying 2 drinks (sodas) my wife had talked to 4 groups of people about my little smartie.
Had only had my smart about a week last year when a young couple slowly cruised past looking me over. The sweet young thing leaned out the window, waved a thumbs-up and blew me a kiss. My sweet-young-thing (wife of 46 years) slaps me on the leg and says "keep your eyes on the road romeo, or next time we'll drive the Crown Vic." We've had nothing but positive feedback....just wish Smart had some kind of a comission set-up. I'll bet I've sold a dozen for them.

You wouldn't happen to live near Griff's, do you ? I went there once for St. Pattys Day about 3 years ago. People were parking EVERYWHERE, in peoples driveways, even in their yards !! I saw a few homeowners actually camped out in there front yards to keep the crowds away. I never went back, TOO crowded !!
Good thing me and a co-worker bailed out of work at noon that day. We got a really close spot, but getting out was a beyotch !!
