Some idiot in a big Ford pickup came storming up behind me and rode my tail HARD. As I always do, I just pulled over to let him pass.
No offense intended to my upcoming question, so please don't take it as such... But I'm wondering...
Was this possibly more about you being in the left lane and not passing someone than being in a small car? I don't know the situation, but I'm a big proponent of trying to get everyone to follow the general rule of "keep right except to pass." The adherence to this one rule would solve nearly ALL road rage aggression. I don't endorse the Ford driver tailgating you, however if he was trying to pass you and there were no more lanes to your left, it is your responsibility to move over for him, even if he is being a jerk. They will ticket for doing this in MN (although it's rare).
Just one person going slowish a lane to the left of the right-most lane just to avoid having to adjust for merging traffic in the right lane really messes up a system. If everyone would stay as far to the right as possible... then move over one lane to pass when needed, and move BACK to the right when done... the roads of this country would see such a positive affect on relieving congestion.
It's reasonable to think that you're being helpful to stay out of the right lane to make it easier for people to merge into traffic. But it's actually less efficient. People will make the necessary adjustments to either speed up to merge in front of you or slow down to merge behind you.
I used to drive at 80 MPH all the time. Since gas prices started to climb, I now set the cruise at about 5 MPH over the limit and sit in the right most lane... people always find a way to get into the flow of traffic without me adjusting my speed. I will move to the left if I have room to help them into the lane, however I'll immediately come back to the right after they've fallen back or sped past me.
Ok, I know it's off topic, but I was just curious. This is one of my largest missions in life... to get everyone to drive courteously and with patience to help people get to work and home with much less stress and to save lives in the process.
Ok back to the regularly scheduled program... (again, sorry!). Nuthin' but love...
Off topic or no, great post. I find that the traffic will pass me in herds, then there's a lull, until the next stampeed.
Meanwhile, the 'slow lane' just cruises, groovin to the tunes, or a great interview with Terry Gross on PBS, or an audio book.
Forgive the repost, but back to bullying - there was a guy in a big thing, who snarled when we stopped at a light, "Where'd you git that little piece of sh!t?"

Thanks Susie! And GREAT response to your less-than-cordial signal neighbor! (It's funny to me because our "insider test drive" last summer was held in an Ikea parking lot... )

Sorry to disappoint you, but this WAS in the right lane. Pulled half onto the shoulder to let the D**-head pass me. I wouldn't have posted the story if I was the one being the A**hole.
Sixcrows... in that case.. Holy junk! That's ridiculous... And sorry again for the soap box... I'll jump on any opportunity to try and "spread the word"... I'm thinking of getting one of those scrolling message boards for my back window to help the left-lane-lollygagers learn the err of their ways... but haven't gotten around to going that far just yet... )
I have had nothing except pleasant experiences since getting the car. Nothing but thumbs up and smiles. Pulled into a convenience store with a gas station the other day and one of the people working there came out and held the door. Of course they just wanted to see the car closer but it still seemed like VIP treatment. The only people who just don't seem to get it is teenagers. You find a group of 3-4 teenagers who spot the car, they immediately start laughing and pointing. I'll be laughing last. This suck ass world we are leaving them will crush their spirit at an early age. When they figure out they can't point and click their way through life and live off their parents income forever, maybe they will be more appreciative. In the meantime, I will enjoy the simple pleasures which include the smart.
